Prior to writing for Shades of Melanin Virgil was an undergraduate student pursuing his bachelors in social work from the College of Staten Island. Following undergrad Virgil was accepted into the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice where he focused on advocating for drug policy reform for marginalized substance users while interning for a statewide harm reduction coalition. Outside of class, Virgil’s hobbies include collecting graphic novels and other literature written by his favorite authors and being a social justice Wakandan warrior. Recently, Virgil graduated with his Masters in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and is looking forward to taking a break from the rigors of grad school. As a writer Virgil is an identified black male feminist who engages with black feminist pedagogy in order to combat toxic masculinity.
